What is the difference between hoisting the flag on Republic Day and Independence Day?

On Republic Day (Jan. 26) it is customary to unfurl the hoisted flag instead of hoisting the national flag. This is called flag opening.

It is performed to announce that India has already gained independence and is now a republic.

On Independence Day (August 15) the flag is hoisted by the Prime Minister from under the pole.

It signifies freedom from colonial rule.
